Two Weeks in Yunnan: A Slower Route Through the Highlands
Two Weeks in Yunnan: A Slower Route Through the Highlands A balanced Kunming, Dali, Shaxi, and Lijiang itinerary with altitude, transfers, and slow days built in. Topics: Plan Your Trip, Itineraries, Nature, Culture.
Yunnan is best when the route slows as the elevation rises. Two weeks allows you to connect cities and old towns without spending every other morning checking out.
Kunming: 2 nights
Use Kunming as a soft landing. See a market, eat across several Yunnan cuisines, and take an easy day trip only if your arrival energy allows it. The city is more valuable as an introduction than as a list of famous sights.
Dali: 4 nights
Base yourself according to the trip you want. Dali Old Town is convenient and lively; villages closer to Erhai Lake can be quieter but require more planning. Give one day to the lake, one to the old town and nearby communities, and keep one flexible for weather or a mountain outing.
Shaxi: 2 nights
Shaxi earns its place by changing the pace. Its old market square, lanes, and surrounding countryside suit travelers who enjoy walking and unstructured time. Road transfers take effort, so one night can feel like more transport than experience.
Lijiang: 3 nights
Lijiang is popular for a reason, but the busiest streets show only one layer. Stay where you can manage luggage without struggling over stone lanes, explore early, and use a full day for nearby villages or landscape.
Buffer and departure: 2–3 nights
Keep the remaining time for an extra Dali or Lijiang day, a higher-altitude extension appropriate to your health and season, or a calm return toward Kunming. Do not add every famous northern stop automatically; elevation, long road journeys, and weather can turn a beautiful route into a tiring one.
Yunnan rewards curiosity more than speed. Choose fewer bases, taste locally, and leave space for the route to change once you understand the landscape.
